Sunshine
We dance in the living room
No music, just the sound of us moving and giggling
You take my hand and pull me close
Your palm fits against mine, steady and warm
I follow your lead even when you laugh and forget the steps
We move together until I’m smiling too much to care
You spin me once and I fall into you
You smell sweet and salty and comforting
I stay against you, the dance forgotten
We sit at your desk with a puzzle
The pieces scattered between us
Your foot touches my leg and strokes up and down my calf affectionately
When our fingers brush reaching for the same piece,
you don’t pull away
You just look up at me with that quiet grin
that always makes me forget what I was about to say
You make me laugh the way I used to when I was little
and didn’t know the world could hurt
Full and unguarded,
safe in the knowledge that your touch won’t bring pain
You say something with that low, even voice I love,
and I can feel it settle somewhere deep in me
I could listen to you talk for hours
Your laugh is one of my favorite sounds
It breaks through me every time,
bright and easy and real
You make me want to smile all the time
Even when you’re not here,
I think of you and the way your face softens when you look at me
and it finds its way to my face
You make everything lighter, like sunshine
You make the world feel gentle
When I’m with you,
I don’t wait for anything bad to happen
I just breathe
I just stay
I just love being near you
